Introduction

Shasthaya Paricharja & Kallayan Sangstha (SPKS) is a Non-Government Organization (NGO). Some organized social workers established it on consensus in 1998 aiming at reducing impact of limited initiatives for human resource development, drug addiction at individual, family & social level and limited health facilities. SPKS has explored a vision, a mission and some objectives including management policies which are legally approved by Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh. Aiming at developing skilled human resource in health sector, SPKS since its inception has been implementing capacity development program for educated unemployed youths focusing on the courses of nursing, midwifery, care giving, medical assistant and medical technology through its health educational institutions for providing health services at grass-root level. Up to this period from 2000 to 2023 approximately 14000 trained youths of SPKS conducted institutes are working in different Government/Non-Government hospitals, diagnostic centers, clinics, NGO health centers and garment sectors at home and abroad with good reputation and many of them have created self-employment by establishing pharmacy, health centers, dental and Physiotherapy clinicts and involved them selves in providing health services among poor people of grass-root level. In addition SPKS raises awareness on Drug Addiction and STD/HIV/AIDS Prevention, Mother & Child Health and Family Planning (MCH and FP), fertility health and EPI through its Interactive Popular Theatre group and Adhare Alo (A monthly news paper) and observing related different Days with performing rallies, seminars, drama & folk song presentation, free medical camps and providing medical check-up/test through clinic to slum dwellers in slum areas of Dhaka city.

Organizational Information
1.1 Organized social workers are categorized as following level:

a. General Committee (GC) b.Executive Committee (EC) c. Advisory Committee (AC).
General Committee (GC): GC is the supreme power authority of SPKS. It is consisted of 21 members. GC sits in a meeting once in each year and approves annual report budget and important necessary and documents after reviewing.

Executive Committee (EC): Members of GC elects 7 members among them and formed EC for 2 years duration. EC is authorized to develop necessary policies and gets those implemented properly by assigned Executive Director (ED). EC is reportable to GC. ED is reportable to EC.

Advisory Committee (AC): For assisting GC and EC, SPKS include an Advisory Committee (AC) consisted of 5 members. Members of AC are highly qualified professional social workers. AC sits in meetings and takes necessary decision related to SPKS after details discussion.

A society of economically productive and equitable, socially just, environmentally sound and genuinely democratic.

1.3 Mission: Empower the poor educated unemployed youths for serving ill women, children and men at grass-root level.

1.4 Major objectives:
To reduce unemployment as well as social injustice and increase better health services at grass-root level through empowering unemployed educated youths on issues of paramedical, pathology, nursing, pharmacy, Physiotherapy, Dental, medical technology, medical assistant, health workers and midwifery.

1.5 Legal status: SPKS is registered by the following departments of ministry of social welfare, Govt. of the Peoples’ Republic of Bangladesh:

2.Results achieved up to this period :

2.1 Outcome:

2.1.1 Educated youths from SPKS established health educational institutions are employed in different Government/Non-Government hospitals, clinics, private health centers and selfemployed and proper active for providing health services and awareness raising at grass root level including slum areas of Dhaka city.

2.1.1 Outputs:

2.2.1 Developed capacity of the nurses and midwife, the care givers, the paramedics, the pathologists, the pharmacists, the physiotherapist, the dentists, the medical technologists, the medical assistants, the health workers and the medical technologists.

2.2.2 Developed capacity for working as positions of Sub-Assistant Community Medical Officer (SACMO) created by Government in Upazila and Union Government Health Complex as well as different non-government and private hospitals, satellite clinics and health centers established nationally.

2.2.3 Contributed in fulfilling positions of technologist created by Government of the Peoples’ Republic of Bangladesh as well as enhancing delivery of health services among community people at grass–root level by establishing private health centers.

2.2.4 Created awareness on health care, maternal child health, Family Planning, HIV/AIDS, Drug addiction,child rights, early marriage, dowry, polygamy acid throw, Right to persons with disabilities, STD/HIV/AIDS as well as Drug and preventive measures.

Beneficiaries:

Overall during last 23 years a total of approximately 14000 youths passed Secondary School Certificate education (SSC), Higher Secondary School Certificate (HSC) with science and other unemployed educated youths gained knowledge and skill on nursing and midwifery, care giving, medical technology, Medical Assistant, Nursing, Midwifery, and Paramedical from SPKS established Pallabi Nursing College, Shadhin Nursing Institutions, Shadhin Technical Institute and SPKS medical Institute. Out of them 25% gained skill on Medical Technology, 6% on Medical Assistant, 13% on nursing, 2% on nurse and Midwifery, 53% on Paramedical and 1% on Care Giving.

3. Major Activities implemented:

3.1 Training of three years Diploma-in-Nursing Science and Midwifery;

3.2 Training of 3/6 years Certificate-In-Care giving (Child and old), general care giving and care giving (old);

3.3 Training of three years diploma course on pathology, nursing, pharmacy and Physiotherapy and one year certificate course on paramedical, pathology, nursing, dental and physiotherapy;

3.4 Training on four year diploma on Medical Assistant.

3.5. 4 years training on laboratory & Pharmacy technology.

3.6 Training of 6 (Six) month diploma and 3 (Three) month certificate course on English Language (Spoken and writing). Training of 4 (four) month certificate course on Graphic Design & Multi-media and 3 (three) month certificate course on Computer Office Application.

3.7 Informed mothers especially pregnant and adolescents the issues of neo-natal, pre-natal, post natal care, family planning methods, contraceptive supply and reproductive health, treatment of sexual diseases and referral for anti-natal and post-natal periodical check-up through door to door visit and discussion in slum areas and distributed Information Education and Communication (IEC) materials.

3.8 Medical camps conducted and provided preventive and curable health services which include test and check-up of pregnant mothers, issues of primary health care, immunization, counseling on reproductive health, family planning methods, neo-natal and post natal care including modes of transmission of sexual diseases.

3.9 Drama, Folk songs, Rally, Day observation, seminars and Information Education Communication (IEC) materials.

5. Strategy:
5.1 Institutional development:

SPKS is a group of health educational institutions established in 1998. Since its inception it has established college and institute entitled (i) Pallabi Nursing College (ii) Shadhin Nursing Institute (iii) Shadhin Technical Institute (iv) SPKS Medical Institute (SMI) (v) SPKS Medical Assistant Training School (MATS) (vi) Institute of Medical Technology (IMT) (vii) Interactive Popular Theatre group and Folk Song (v) SPKS Institute of Skill Development & Management (SISDM) (viii) Mother & Child Health/Family Planning (MCH-FP) care center and (ix) Satellite Health Care Center.

6. Methodology:
SPKS established College and Institutes are as follows:
6.1 Pallabi Nursing College:

It is established in 2013 at Mirpur in Dhaka, Bangladesh which is approved by Bangladesh Nursing and Midwifery Council and National Skill Development Authority (NSDA), Government of the Peoples’ Republic of Bangladesh. Through this college, educated youths passed Higher Secondary School Certificate (HSC) and other unemployed educated persons are provided three years Diploma-In-Nursing and Midwifery course and 3/6 month Certificate-.In-Care Giving course respectively.

6.2 Shadhin Nursing Institute:

It is established in 2019 at Mirpur in Dhaka, Bangladesh which is approved by Bangladesh Nursing and Midwifery Council, Government of the Peoples Republic of Bangladesh. Through this insttitute, educated youths passed Higher Secondary School Certificate (HSC) are provided three years Diploma-In-Midwifery course.

6.4 SPKS Medical Institute (SMI):

It is established in 2005 at Mirpur in Dhaka, Bangladesh which is approved by Bangladesh technical education board, Government of the Peoples, Republic of Bangladesh. Through this institute, unemployed educated youths are provided training of three years diploma course on pathology, nursing, pharmacy and Physiotherapy and one year certificate course on paramedical, pathology, nursing, dental and physiotherapy

6.5 SPKS Medical Assistant Training School (MATS):

It is established in 2008. Through established SPKS MATS youths passed Secondary School Certificate (S.S.C) with science are provided four year diploma on Medical Assistant.

6.6 Institute of Medical Technology (IMT):

It is established in 2010. Through this institution, youths passed Secondary School Certificate (S.S.C) with science are provided four year training on laboratory & Pharmacy technology.

6.7 Interactive Popular Theatre group and Folk Song:

SPKS exists developed dedicated and skilled Interactive Popular Theatre group (A cultural team) which organizes and performes activities of drama, folk songs, rally, day observation, seminar and Information Education Communication (IEC) materials distribution on health care, maternal child health, Family Planning, HIV/AIDS, Drug addiction, child rights, early marriage, dowry, polygamy acid throw and Right to persons with disabilities.

6.10 Satellite Health Care Center:

Occasion basis, SPKS Satellite Health Care team consisted of professional physicians and students completed paramedical course sets up camps in grass-root level which provide preventive and curable health services of test and check-up of pregnant mothers, issues of primary health care, immunization, counseling on reproductive health, family planning methods, neo-natal and post natal care including ways of transmission of sexual diseases.

6.8 SPKS Institute of Skill Development & Management (SISDM):

SPKS has recently established SISDM) at Mirpur, Dhaka aiming at developing skill of people of different occupations on English Language (Spoken and writing) Graphic Design & Multi-media and Computer Office Application.

6.9 Mother & Child Health/Family Planning (MCH-FP) care center:

It is established attached to its main office. On regular basis through this center the medical graduates facilitated by senior students of Paramedical course are providing necessary mother & child health and family planning services among mother (especially pregnant), adolescents and children of slum areas.
